Our Story
Mr. Rum
Shortly after Barbados became the birthplace of Rum; Rum Shops were born, initially started as small, family-run businesses, often attached to their homes, to provide supplemental income. They grew to become integral community hubs, evolving from simple drinking establishments to spaces for social gathering, commerce, and entertainment.
Today, Rum Shops remain vital community centers where people discuss local and world news, politics, and sports. They have historically served as places for entertainment, with locals gathering to watch sports, listen to music, or play games like dominoes, draughts (checkers), and cards. Some shops even function as grocery stores, restaurants, and beach cafes, acting as a one-shop for the local community.
Mrs. Pepper
Just as Rum is a symbol of Barbadian heritage, Pepper Sauce is a popular local delicacy and an integral part of the country’s culinary experience, served with meals and available at Rum Shops and markets. Pepper sauce is often sold and consumed alongside Spirits in Rum Shops as a complementary condiment. Barbados has a long history with spicy foods, and Pepper Sauce is a prominent part of its culinary tradition.
